Pay It Forward Ethiopia

Our Story

Our story begins when Pat adopted Tesfaye and his two younger siblings from Ethiopia. Encouraged by Pat, the children kept close to their heritage. Thankful for their blessings in America, they decided they wanted to do more. Pat and Tesfaye were inspired to create Pay It Forward Ethiopia Inc. To supplement the nonprofit’s funding, they opened Taste of Ethiopia Food Truck.

They created a three-tier plan that strives to empower youth and families to alleviate hunger and diminish illiteracy among the most vulnerable families and orphans in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Their philosophy is to go beyond the traditional mentality and shift the missional status quo in Ethiopia from orphan-care to orphan prevention.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

James 1:27

School Feeding Program

School Feeding Program

All too often, children are unable to attend school. Their time and focus is spent begging and foraging in the streets and landfills in an attempt to survive. Our goal is to encourage children to continue their education by providing hot, nutritious meals at the school each day. This action promotes development, self-reliance and education to produce future generations with healthy minds and bodies.

We will work closely with the governmental agencies and social service organizations to identify and procure safe, sustainable food. The school feeding will be done at the school in a kitchen and dining room provided by the school where the food is provided, cooked, and served to the students by Ethiopian Pay It Forward staff.

Family Assistance Center

Family Assistance Center

When school has finished for the day, children have limited options. Parents/caregivers are often working late to provide for their families and cannot afford supervision. This situation places these families in a highly vulnerable position.

The Drop-In Center will focus on encouraging familial unity. We will provide them with feeding, basic medical care, clothing, sanitation and educational materials. In addition, we will set up a safe, temporary shelter for street children. We believe that temporary shelter can help facilitate the reunification process as we attempt to find relatives or foster care.

Self-Sustaining Aquaponics System

Aquaponics

Fresh food supplies and clean water are not easily acquired in Ethiopia. An aquaponics system uses very little water and energy consumption compared to conventional farming techniques. It will allow us to harvest fresh, healthy, locally grown tilapia and a variety of vegetables. In addition, the system will provide local jobs and additional income for our other two tiers.

We have purchased a Nelson and Pade aquaponics system. We are raising funds for shipping costs. Once the system has arrived, USA staff will teach the local team of Ethiopia staff how to assemble and maintain the farming system.
